Kidney failure can cause decreased urination, shortness of breath, swelling in the limbs, confusion and drowsiness, fatigue, or chest pain. Kidney failure can be life-threatening and require dialysis or transplantation.
- Skin problems. High uric acid can cause tophi, which are lumps of uric acid crystals that form under the skin, especially around the joints, ears, fingers, or toes. Tophi can be painless or painful and may become infected or ulcerated. High uric acid can also cause itching, rashes, or peeling of the skin.
